Chapter 10 Music The Interface of Music Therapy and Psychotherapy With Adolescents in a Hospital-Based Consultation-Liaison Mental Health Service—Eclecticism in Action

This chapter explores the interface of music and verbal psychotherapy with adolescents in a hospital-based consultation-liaison (CL) mental health service. The chapter commences with a description of the CL service with reference to the role of music therapy. Second, theoretical orientation in psychiatric music therapy practice is discussed. Third, the current evidence base for the efficacy of music therapy in child and youth mental health is highlighted and an argument for the application of an eclectic or blended approach put forward. Last, three case studies outlining the use of songwriting with adolescents to address varied goals are provided. McFerran’s “map of the relationship between the therapist’s orientation, stance and intention in conventional music therapy” (2010, p. 54) structures the reported case studies. One example from each of the theoretical approaches—psychodynamic, humanistic, and behavioral (or cognitive-behavioral)—is offered. Goals, treatment approach, and evaluation are presented with reference to songs written with each of the adolescents during therapy.
